Linux Foundation Xen up to 4.4.0 HVM Controller HVMOP_inject_msi null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Foundation Xen up to 4.4.0 and classified as problematic. This impacts the function HVMOP_inject_msi of the component HVM Controller. This manipulation causes null pointer dereference. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-3967. There is no exploit available. Applying a patch is the recommended action to fix this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Linux Foundation Xen up to 4.4.0 (Virtualization Software). Affected by this vulnerability is the function HVMOP_inject_msi of the component HVM Controller. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability.

The weakness was shared 06/03/2014 by Jan Beulich with SuSE as XSA-96 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at xenbits.xenproject.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. The advisory contains:

The vulnerability is only exposed to service domains for HVM guests which have privilege over the guest. In a usual configuration that means only device model emulators (qemu-dm).
This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-3967 since 06/04/2014. An attack has to be approached locally. A single authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 76221 (Fedora 20 : xen-4.3.2-5.fc20 (2014-7423)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 123186 (Fedora Security Update for xen (FEDORA-2015-0331)).

Applying the patch xsa96.patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at xenbits.xenproject.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:

Running only PV guests will avoid this vulnerability. In a radically disaggregated system, restricting HVM service domains to software images approved by the host administrator will avoid the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (93606), Tenable (76221), SecurityFocus (BID 67794†), OSVDB (107703†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1030322†). The entries VDB-12695, VDB-13087, VDB-13151 and VDB-13468 are related to this item. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
