A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Linux Foundation Xen up to 4.3 on x86 (Virtualization Software). Affected by this vulnerability is the function HVMOP_set_mem_type of the file hvm.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. The weakness was disclosed 04/29/2014 by Jan Beulich with SuSE as XSA-92 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at xenbits.xenproject.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-3124 since 04/29/2014. The exploitation appears to be difficult. Attacking locally is a requirement. A single authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78117 (openSUSE Security Update : xen (openSUSE-SU-2014:1281-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 123186 (Fedora Security Update for xen (FEDORA-2015-0331)).
Applying the patch xsa92.patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at xenbits.xenproject.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:
Running only PV guests will avoid this vulnerability. In a radically disaggregated system, restricting HVM service domains to software images approved by the host administrator will avoid the vulnerability.
