Details
A vulnerability was found in OpenSSL 0.9.8/1.0.0/1.0.1 (Network Encryption Software). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown function of the file ssl/d1_both.c of the component DTLS Fragment Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The issue has been introduced in 08/12/2009. The weakness was shared 06/05/2014 by Jüri Aedla as secadv_20140605.txt as confirmed advisory (Website) via ZDI (Zero Day Initiative). The advisory is available at openssl.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2014-0195 since 12/03/2013. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1758 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74415 (Mandriva Linux Security Advisory : openssl (MDVSA-2014:106)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 185081 (HP-UX Running OpenSSL Multiple Vulnerabilities (HPSBUX03046)).
Upgrading to version 0.9.8za, 1.0.0m or 1.0.1h eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:
The fix was developed by Stephen Henson of the OpenSSL core team.
