Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in OpenSSL 1.0.0/1.0.1 (Network Encryption Software). This vulnerability affects the function ssl3_read_bytes of the component SSL Mode Release Buffers Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
Race condition in the ssl3_read_bytes function in s3_pkt.c in OpenSSL through 1.0.1g, when SSL_MODE_RELEASE_BUFFERS is enabled, allows remote attackers to inject data across sessions or cause a denial of service (use-after-free and parsing error) via an SSL connection in a multithreaded environment.
The issue has been introduced in 03/29/2010. The weakness was released 06/05/2014 by Benson Kwok as secadv_20140605.txt as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at openssl.org. The public release happened without coordination with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-5298 since 04/14/2014. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1477 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74340 (Fedora 19 : openssl-1.0.1e-38.fc19 (2014-7101)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350258 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for openssl: AL2012-2014-003).
Upgrading to version 1.0.0m or 1.0.1h eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (74340), SecurityFocus (BID 66801†), Secunia (SA58403†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-50601†). Additional details are provided at isc.sans.edu. Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-11600, VDB-11705, VDB-11778 and VDB-13014. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
