Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Rust Programming Language Standard Library up to 1.34.1 (Software Library). This affects the function Error::type_id. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The Rust Programming Language Standard Library 1.34.x before 1.34.2 contains a stabilized method which, if overridden, can violate Rust's safety guarantees and cause memory unsafety. If the `Error::type_id` method is overridden then any type can be safely cast to any other type, causing memory safety vulnerabilities in safe code (e.g., out-of-bounds write or read). Code that does not manually implement Error::type_id is unaffected.
The bug was discovered 05/13/2019. The weakness was disclosed 05/13/2019 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at lists.fedoraproject.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2019-12083 since 05/13/2019. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation.
