A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in D-Link DGL-5500, DHP-1565, DIR-652, DIR-835 and DIR-855L 1.02b18 (Router Operating System). This affects an unknown code block of the file apply.cgi. The manipulation of the argument action with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. This is going to have an impact on integrity.
The weakness was presented 05/22/2014 by Kyle Lovett as File 126779 as not defined advisory (Packetstorm). The advisory is shared at packetstormsecurity.com. The public release happened without involvement of D-Link. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details and a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue. For the file "apply.cgi" ("apply_sec.cgi" on the DGL-5500) the POST param "action" suffers from a XSS vulnerability due to improper neutralization of user input / return output.
A public exploit has been developed by Kyle Lovett in HTTP POST Request and been published 4 days after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 32 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
