A vulnerability was found in Apple watchOS up to 5.2.0 (Smartwatch Operating System) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the component MobileInstallation. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a link following vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-59. The product attempts to access a file based on the filename, but it does not properly prevent that filename from identifying a link or shortcut that resolves to an unintended resource. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was presented 05/13/2019 by Dany Lisiansky as HT210122 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2019-8568 since 02/18/2019. Local access is required to approach this attack. A simple authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The advisory points out:
A validation issue existed in the handling of symlinks. This issue was addressed with improved validation of symlinks.
The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 371785 (Apple macOS Mojave 10.14.5, Security Update 2019-003 High Sierra, Security Update 2019-003 Sierra Not Installed (HT210119)).
Upgrading to version 5.2.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
