Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 11 (Web Browser). This affects the function CSpliceTreeEngine::RemoveSplice of the component MSHTML. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The issue has been introduced in 06/26/2013. The weakness was presented 06/10/2014 by Yujie Wen, Bo Qu and SkyLined with Zero Day Initiative as MS14-035 as confirmed bulletin (Technet) via ZDI (Zero Day Initiative). It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-1785 since 01/29/2014. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details and a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed by Skylined and been published 3 years after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 349 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74427 (MS14-035: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (2969262)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100202 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Multiple Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS14-035)).
Applying the patch MS14-035 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13484.
