A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Microsoft Lync 2010/2013 (Unified Communication Software). This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component Meeting Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-79. The product does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes user-controllable input before it is placed in output that is used as a web page that is served to other users. Impacted is integrity.
The weakness was disclosed 06/10/2014 with Microsoft as MS14-032 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-1823 since 01/29/2014. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059.007 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74424 (MS14-032: Vulnerability in Microsoft Lync Server Could Allow Information Disclosure (2969258)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90957 (Microsoft Lync Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS14-032)). The advisory illustrates:
To exploit this vulnerability, an attacker would have to convince a user to click a specially crafted URL for a Lync meeting that has a valid Lync meeting ID.
Applying the patch MS14-032 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
