Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Mozilla Firefox 29.0.1 (Web Browser). This affects an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple unspecified vulnerabilities in the browser engine in Mozilla Firefox before 30.0 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via unknown vectors.
The weakness was disclosed 06/10/2014 by Gary Kwong, Jesse Ruderman, Christian Holler, Gregor Wagner, Benoit Jacob, Karl Tomlinson and Jeff Walden as MFSA2014-48 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at mozilla.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-1534 since 01/16/2014. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The advisory points out:
Mozilla developers and community identified identified and fixed several memory safety bugs in the browser engine used in Firefox and other Mozilla-based products. Some of these bugs showed evidence of memory corruption under certain circumstances, and we presume that with enough effort at least some of these could be exploited to run arbitrary code.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74444 (FreeBSD : mozilla -- multiple vulnerabilities (888a0262-f0d9-11e3-ba0c-b4b52fce4ce8)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195520 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Firefox Vulnerabilities (USN-2243-1)).
Upgrading to version 30.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (93706), Tenable (74444), SecurityFocus (BID 67964†), Secunia (SA59171†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1030388†). Further details are available at bugzilla.mozilla.org. The entries VDB-13556, VDB-13558, VDB-13559 and VDB-13560 are pretty similar.
