The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The bug was discovered 05/13/2019. The weakness was disclosed 05/28/2019 by G. Geshev with Zero Day Initiative as HT210124 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2019-8615 since 02/18/2019. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The advisory points out:
Multiple memory corruption issues were addressed with improved memory handling.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 15 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 197471 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Webkit2gtk Vulnerabilities (USN-3992-1)).
Upgrading to version 12.9.5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
