A vulnerability was found in IBM AIX 3.1/3.2 (Operating System). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown function of the component rexd Service. The rexd service is running, which uses weak authentication that can allow an attacker to execute commands.
The issue has been introduced in 02/01/1990. The weakness was presented 03/01/1992 with CERT/CC (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at securitydigest.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-1999-0627. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available.
The exploit is available at immunitysec.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 759 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 10224 (rexd service), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family RPC. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 66031 (Checking Presence of the rpc rex deamon).
Upgrading to version 4.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 601.
