Details
A vulnerability has been found in RubyGems up to 3.0.2 (Programming Language Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function Gem::GemcutterUtilities#with_response of the component API Response Handler. The manipulation as part of a Escape Sequence leads to a injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-74. The product constructs all or part of a command, data structure, or record using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify how it is parsed or interpreted when it is sent to a downstream component. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
An issue was discovered in RubyGems 2.6 and later through 3.0.2. Gem::GemcutterUtilities#with_response may output the API response to stdout as it is. Therefore, if the API side modifies the response, escape sequence injection may occur.
The bug was discovered 03/05/2019. The weakness was disclosed 06/17/2019 (Website). The advisory is shared at lists.opensuse.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2019-8323 since 02/13/2019. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
