Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in RubyGems up to 3.0.2 (Programming Language Software). This vulnerability affects an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
A Directory Traversal issue was discovered in RubyGems 2.7.6 and later through 3.0.2. Before making new directories or touching files (which now include path-checking code for symlinks), it would delete the target destination. If that destination was hidden behind a symlink, a malicious gem could delete arbitrary files on the user's machine, presuming the attacker could guess at paths. Given how frequently gem is run as sudo, and how predictable paths are on modern systems (/tmp, /usr, etc.), this could likely lead to data loss or an unusable system.
The bug was discovered 03/05/2019. The weakness was disclosed 06/06/2019 (Website). The advisory is available at blog.rubygems.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2019-8320 since 02/13/2019. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1006 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 93 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 176762 (Debian Security Update for ruby2.1 (DLA 1735-1)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
