A vulnerability was found in Sun Solaris 2.0 (Operating System). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the component SNMP Account. The manipulation of the argument Community Name with an unknown input leads to a improper authentication vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-287. An SNMP community name is the default (e.g. public), null, or missing.
The weakness was disclosed 01/01/1997 with Network Associates (Website). The advisory is available at cert.uni-stuttgart.de. This vulnerability was named CVE-1999-0517. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
After 3 years, there has been an exploit disclosed. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 41028 (SNMP Agent Default Community Name (public)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SNMP and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 78030 (Readable SNMP Information).
It is possible to mitigate the problem by adding an authentication mechanism. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 1411.
