Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in SGI IRIX 5.3/6.2 (Operating System). This issue affects an unknown functionality of the file /usr/lib/netaddpr. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
addnetpr in sgi irix 6.2 and earlier allows local users to modify arbitrary files and possibly gain root access via a symlink attack on a temporary file.
The issue has been introduced in 11/01/1994. The weakness was shared 05/09/1997 by Jaechul Choe with AIST as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared at archives.neohapsis.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-1999-1286. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in Shell File and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at downloads.securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 920 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
