A vulnerability classified as critical was found in SGI IRIX up to 6.5.10 (Operating System). This vulnerability affects an unknown function of the component inpview. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a local privilege escalation vulnerability. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
inpview in InPerson on IRIX 5.3 through IRIX 6.5.10 trusts the PATH environmental variable to find and execute the ttsession program, which allows local users to obtain root access by modifying the PATH to point to a Trojan horse ttsession program.
The issue has been introduced in 11/01/1994. The weakness was presented 05/07/1997 by Yuri Volobuev (FIRST) as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared for download at marc.theaimsgroup.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-1999-1461. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
