This vulnerability is known as CVE-2005-1228. Access to the local network is required for this attack. No exploit is available. The affected component should be upgraded.
Details
A vulnerability was found in GNU gzip 1.2.4/1.3.3. It has been classified as problematic. Affected is an unknown part. The manipulation of the argument -N with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, and integrity. CVE summarizes:
Directory traversal vulnerability in gunzip -N in gzip 1.2.4 through 1.3.5 allows remote attackers to write to arbitrary directories via a .. (dot dot) in the original filename within a compressed file.
The bug was discovered 04/20/2005. The weakness was published 04/21/2005 by Ulf Härnhammar (Website). The advisory is available at secunia.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2005-1228 since 04/22/2005. The attack needs to be done within the local network. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1006 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21810 (CentOS 3 / 4 : gzip (CESA-2005:357)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117914 (CentOS Security Update for gzip (CESA-2005:357)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at gzip.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (20199), Tenable (21810), SecurityFocus (BID 13290†), OSVDB (15721†) and Secunia (SA15047†). Similar entries are available at VDB-24770 and VDB-25166. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
