Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in gzip 1.2.4/1.2.4a/1.3.3. Affected by this issue is an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
race condition in gzip 1.2.4 1.3.3 and earlier when decompressing a gzipped file allows local users to modify permissions of arbitrary files via a hard link attack on a file while it is being decompressed whose permissions are changed by gzip after the decompression is complete.
The bug was discovered 04/04/2005. The weakness was published 05/02/2005 by Imran Ghory (Website). The advisory is available at archives.neohapsis.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2005-0988 since 04/06/2005. The exploitation is known to be difficult. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1006 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 8 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 18673 (Debian DSA-752-1 : gzip - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117914 (CentOS Security Update for gzip (CESA-2005:357)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
