A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in SGI IRIX 6.2/6.3/6.4 (Operating System). This affects an unknown code block of the file pfdispaly.cgi. Directory traversal vulnerability in pfdispaly.cgi program (sometimes referred to as "pfdisplay") for SGI's Performer API Search Tool (performer_tools) allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files.

The issue has been introduced in 03/01/1996. The weakness was presented 04/03/1998 by J.A. Gutierrez as not defined exploit (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at patches.sgi.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-1999-0270. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1006 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

A public exploit has been developed by J.A. Gutierrez and been published even before and not after the advisory. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 763 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 10174 (IRIX pfdispaly Arbitrary File Access), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 10007 (IRIS Performer API Search Tool Vulnerability).

Upgrading to version 6.5 eliminates this vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 1655. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 525.
