Linux Kernel up to 5.3.8 V4L2 Subsystem vivid vivid_stop_generating_vid_cap race condition

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.3.8. It has been rated as critical. This affects the function vivid_stop_generating_vid_cap of the file drivers/media/platform/vivid of the component V4L2 Subsystem. This manipulation causes race condition. This vulnerability appears as CVE-2019-18683. The attack requires local access. There is no available exploit.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 5.3.8 (Operating System) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function vivid_stop_generating_vid_cap of the file drivers/media/platform/vivid of the component V4L2 Subsystem. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

An issue was discovered in drivers/media/platform/vivid in the Linux kernel through 5.3.8. It is exploitable for privilege escalation on some Linux distributions where local users have /dev/video0 access, but only if the driver happens to be loaded. There are multiple race conditions during streaming stopping in this driver (part of the V4L2 subsystem). These issues are caused by wrong mutex locking in vivid_stop_generating_vid_cap(), vivid_stop_generating_vid_out(), sdr_cap_stop_streaming(), and the corresponding kthreads. At least one of these race conditions leads to a use-after-free.

The weakness was presented 11/04/2019. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2019-18683 since 11/04/2019. Attacking locally is a requirement. The successful exploitation requires a single authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
