Details
A vulnerability was found in sudo up to 1.8.29 (Operating System Utility Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown functionality of the file /proc/#####/fd/3 of the component Descriptor Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Sudo through 1.8.29 allows local users to escalate to root if they have write access to file descriptor 3 of the sudo process. This occurs because of a race condition between determining a uid, and the setresuid and openat system calls. The attacker can write "ALL ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD:ALL" to /proc/#####/fd/3 at a time when Sudo is prompting for a password.
The weakness was shared 11/04/2019. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2019-18684 since 11/04/2019. The attack needs to be approached locally. The successful exploitation needs a simple authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The real existence of this vulnerability is still doubted at the moment.
