Internet Explorer 5.0 allows a remote server to read arbitrary files on the client's file system using the Microsoft Scriptlet Component.

The issue has been introduced in 06/02/1998. The weakness was presented 04/09/1999 as MS99-012 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-1999-0468. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
