Internet Explorer 5.0 allows a remote server to read arbitrary files on the client's file system using the Microsoft Scriptlet Component.
The issue has been introduced in 06/02/1998. The weakness was presented 04/09/1999 as MS99-012 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-1999-0468. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
