A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0/5.0 (Web Browser). Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality in the library MSHTML.DLL. The manipulation of the argument img with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. MSHTML.DLL in Internet Explorer 5.0 allows a remote attacker to learn information about a local user's files via an IMG SRC tag.
The issue has been introduced in 04/01/1997. The weakness was presented 04/21/1999 as MS99-012 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-1999-0490. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
