A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0/5.0 (Web Browser). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown function of the component DHTML Edit ActiveX Control. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. The DHTML Edit ActiveX control in Internet Explorer allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files.
The issue has been introduced in 04/01/1997. The weakness was presented 04/21/1999 as MS99-011 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-1999-0487. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 750 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.
