Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Linux Kernel 5.0.21 (Operating System). Affected is the function __btrfs_map_block of the file fs/btrfs/volumes.c of the component btrfs Filesystem Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds write vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-787. The product writes data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel 5.0.21, mounting a crafted btrfs filesystem image and performing some operations can cause slab-out-of-bounds write access in __btrfs_map_block in fs/btrfs/volumes.c, because a value of 1 for the number of data stripes is mishandled.
The weakness was shared 12/17/2019. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2019-19816 since 12/16/2019. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
