FreeBSD up to 5.4 on Hyper Threading information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in FreeBSD on Hyper Threading (Operating System). Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Hyper-Threading technology, as used in FreeBSD and other operating systems that are run on Intel Pentium and other processors, allows local users to use a malicious thread to create covert channels, monitor the execution of other threads, and obtain sensitive information such as cryptographic keys, via a timing attack on memory cache misses.

The bug was discovered 03/04/2005. The weakness was disclosed 05/13/2005 by Colin Percival (Website). The advisory is shared at ftp.freebsd.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2005-0109 since 01/18/2005. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20522 (Ubuntu 4.10 / 5.04 : linux-source-2.6.8.1, linux-source-2.6.10 vulnerabilities (USN-131-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117897 (CentOS Security Update for OpenSSL (CESA-2005:476)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at ftp.freebsd.org. A possible mitigation has been published 4 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (20522), SecurityFocus (BID 12724†), OSVDB (16440†), Secunia (SA18165†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1013967†). The entries VDB-950, VDB-1539 and VDB-24996 are pretty similar. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
