Details
A vulnerability was found in OpenSSL (Network Encryption Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function der_chop of the component Temporary File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The der_chop script in the openssl package in Trustix Secure Linux 1.5 through 2.1 and other operating systems allows local users to overwrite files via a symlink attack on temporary files.
The issue has been introduced in 09/24/2000. The weakness was published 10/26/2004 with Trustix (Website). The advisory is available at trustix.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2004-0975 since 10/19/2004. Access to the local network is required for this attack. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a exploit are known.
After before and not just, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1493 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21830 (CentOS 3 / 4 : openssl (CESA-2005:476)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117897 (CentOS Security Update for OpenSSL (CESA-2005:476)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at openssl.org. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (17583), Tenable (21830), SecurityFocus (BID 11293†), OSVDB (11125†) and Secunia (SA12973†).
