Details
A vulnerability was found in Cisco MGX8200 WAN Switch (affected version unknown). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown functionality of the component TCP Timestamp Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
Multiple TCP implementations with Protection Against Wrapped Sequence Numbers (PAWS) with the timestamps option enabled allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (connection loss) via a spoofed packet with a large timer value, which causes the host to discard later packets because they appear to be too old.
The bug was discovered 05/18/2005. The weakness was disclosed 05/19/2005 by Noritoshi Demizu with US-CERT (Website). The advisory is shared for download at cisco.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2005-0356 since 02/11/2005. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1499.
A public exploit has been developed by Daniel Hartmeier and been published 2 days after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78204 (F5 Networks BIG-IP : Inadequate validation for TCP segments (SOL4743)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family F5 Networks Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90249 (Microsoft Windows TCP Reset Through Arbitrary Timer Value).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at cisco.com. A possible mitigation has been published 3 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (20635), Exploit-DB (1008), Tenable (78204), SecurityFocus (BID 13676†) and OSVDB (16685†). The entries VDB-1489, VDB-1490, VDB-1491 and VDB-1535 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
