A vulnerability was found in OpenBSD up to 3.6 (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component TCP Connection Timestamp Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-404. Multiple TCP implementations with Protection Against Wrapped Sequence Numbers (PAWS) with the timestamps option enabled allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (connection loss) via a spoofed packet with a large timer value, which causes the host to discard later packets because they appear to be too old.
The bug was discovered 05/18/2005. The weakness was presented 05/19/2005 by Noritoshi Demizu with US-CERT (Website). The advisory is shared at openbsd.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2005-0356 since 02/11/2005. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1499 for this issue.
After 2 days, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78204 (F5 Networks BIG-IP : Inadequate validation for TCP segments (SOL4743)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family F5 Networks Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90249 (Microsoft Windows TCP Reset Through Arbitrary Timer Value).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at ftp.openbsd.org. A possible mitigation has been published 3 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
