A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Symantec Mail-Gear 1.0. This issue affects an unknown code of the component Web Interface. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Symantec Mail-Gear 1.0 web interface server allows remote users to read arbitrary files via a .. (dot dot) attack.
The weakness was published 11/29/1999 by Ussr Labs (Website). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-1999-0842. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.
