Red Hat Ansible Engine 2.7.x/2.8.x/2.9.x permission assignment

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Red Hat Ansible Engine 2.7.x/2.8.x/2.9.x. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a permission assignment vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-732. The product specifies permissions for a security-critical resource in a way that allows that resource to be read or modified by unintended actors. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

A flaw was found in Ansible Engine when a file is moved using atomic_move primitive as the file mode cannot be specified. This sets the destination files world-readable if the destination file does not exist and if the file exists, the file could be changed to have less restrictive permissions before the move. This could lead to the disclosure of sensitive data. All versions in 2.7.x, 2.8.x and 2.9.x branches are believed to be vulnerable.

The weakness was published 03/16/2020 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2020-1736 since 11/27/2019. The exploitation appears to be difficult. An attack has to be approached locally. The successful exploitation needs a single authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 249955 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2020-1736), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
