A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Newlib libc Library up to 3.2.x (Software Library). This issue affects the function __mdiff in the library newlib/libc/stdlib/mprec.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. In the __mdiff function of the newlib libc library, all versions prior to 3.3.0 (see newlib/libc/stdlib/mprec.c), Balloc is used to allocate big integers, however no check is performed to verify if the allocation succeeded or not. The access to _wds and _sign will trigger a null pointer dereference bug in case of a memory allocation failure.
The weakness was shared 03/19/2020 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at census-labs.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2019-14877 since 08/10/2019. The attack may be initiated remotely. The successful exploitation needs a simple authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
