Details
A vulnerability was found in Perl up to 5.30.2 (Programming Language Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component Regular Expression. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Perl before 5.30.3 has an integer overflow related to mishandling of a "PL_regkind[OP(n)] == NOTHING" situation. A crafted regular expression could lead to malformed bytecode with a possibility of instruction injection.
The weakness was released 06/05/2020 (GitHub Repository). The advisory is shared at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2020-10878 since 03/23/2020. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 236646 (Alibaba Cloud Linux 3 : 0012: perl (ALINUX3-SA-2021:0012)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 5.30.3 eliminates this vulnerability.
