Details
A vulnerability has been found in Perl up to 5.30.2 (Programming Language Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function S_study_chunk of the file regcomp.c of the component Regular Expression. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
regcomp.c in Perl before 5.30.3 allows a buffer overflow via a crafted regular expression because of recursive S_study_chunk calls.
The weakness was released 06/05/2020 (GitHub Repository). The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2020-12723 since 05/08/2020. The attack can be initiated remotely.
