The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a format string vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-134. The product uses a function that accepts a format string as an argument, but the format string originates from an external source. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
rpc.statd in the nfs-utils package in various Linux distributions does not properly cleanse untrusted format strings, which allows remote attackers to gain root privileges.
The issue has been introduced in 10/03/1996. The weakness was presented 07/16/2000 as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared for download at cert.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2000-0666. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1382 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 61819 (Mandrake Linux Security Advisory : nfs-utils (MDKSA-2000:021)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 66041 (nlockmgr RPC Service Multiple Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 1890. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3042.
