A vulnerability was found in Adobe Acrobat Reader up to 7.0 on Linux/Solaris (Document Reader Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function UnixAppOpenFilePerform of the file /Filespec. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Stack-based buffer overflow in the UnixAppOpenFilePerform function in Adobe Reader 5.0.9 and 5.0.10 for Unix allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a PDF document with a long /Filespec tag.
The bug was discovered 05/12/2005. The weakness was disclosed 07/05/2005 by iDefense with iDEFENSE (Website). The advisory is available at idefense.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2005-1625 since 05/17/2005. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 54 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 18979 (FreeBSD : acroread -- buffer overflow vulnerability (70c59485-ee5a-11d9-8310-0001020eed82)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 105233 (Red Hat Adobe Acrobat Reader UnixAppOpenFilePerform Buffer Overflow Vulnerability).
Upgrading to version 7.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at adobe.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
