Details
A vulnerability was found in net-snmp up to 5.2.1 (Network Management Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown functionality of the component TCP Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
Net-SNMP 5.0.x before 5.0.10.2, 5.2.x before 5.2.1.2, and 5.1.3, when net-snmp is using stream sockets such as TCP, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (daemon hang and CPU consumption) via a TCP packet of length 1, which triggers an infinite loop.
The bug was discovered 11/22/2006. The weakness was presented 07/06/2005 with net-snmp Team (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at sourceforge.net. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2005-2177 since 07/10/2005. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20604 (Ubuntu 4.10 / 5.04 / 5.10 : ucd-snmp vulnerability (USN-190-2)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117853 (CentOS Security Update for net-snmp (CESA-2005:373)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at sourceforge.net. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 4 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
