Details
A vulnerability was found in Sun Solaris 10 (Operating System). It has been classified as critical. Affected is an unknown code of the component SUNWsmagt Net-SNMP. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
Net-SNMP 5.0.x before 5.0.10.2, 5.2.x before 5.2.1.2, and 5.1.3, when net-snmp is using stream sockets such as TCP, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (daemon hang and CPU consumption) via a TCP packet of length 1, which triggers an infinite loop.
The bug was discovered 11/22/2006. The weakness was released 11/23/2006 with Sun Microsystems Inc. (Website). The advisory is available at sunsolve.sun.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2005-2177 since 07/10/2005. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 156 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20604 (Ubuntu 4.10 / 5.04 / 5.10 : ucd-snmp vulnerability (USN-190-2)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117853 (CentOS Security Update for net-snmp (CESA-2005:373)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at sunsolve.sun.com. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (21246), Tenable (20604), SecurityFocus (BID 21256†), OSVDB (17754†) and Secunia (SA25787†).
