Details
A vulnerability was found in ProFTPD 1.3.0 (File Transfer Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects the function CommandBufferSize of the file main.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
Stack-based buffer overflow in the sreplace function in ProFTPD 1.3.0 and earlier allows remote attackers, probably authenticated, to cause a denial of service and execute arbitrary code, as demonstrated by vd_proftpd.pm, a "ProFTPD remote exploit."
The weakness was published 11/22/2006 by Evgeny Legerov with ProFTPD Team (Website). The advisory is shared at proftp.cvs.sourceforge.net. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-5815 since 11/08/2006. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in Perl Module and been published 6 days after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 24602 (Mandrake Linux Security Advisory : proftpd (MDKSA-2006:217-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 27285 (ProFTPD SReplace Remote Buffer Overflow Vulnerability).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at proftp.cvs.sourceforge.net. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 26189.
