Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in ProFTPD 1.3.0 (File Transfer Software). This affects some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Stack-based buffer overflow in the sreplace function in ProFTPD 1.3.0 and earlier allows remote attackers, probably authenticated, to cause a denial of service and execute arbitrary code, as demonstrated by vd_proftpd.pm, a "ProFTPD remote exploit."
The weakness was presented 11/10/2006 by Evgeny Legerov with GLEG Ltd. (Website). The advisory is shared at gleg.net. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2006-5815 since 11/08/2006. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed in Perl Module and been published 3 weeks after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 24602 (Mandrake Linux Security Advisory : proftpd (MDKSA-2006:217-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 27285 (ProFTPD SReplace Remote Buffer Overflow Vulnerability).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at proftpd.org.It is possible to mitigate the weakness by firewalling . The best possible mitigation is suggested to be applying a restrictive firewalling. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (30147), Exploit-DB (16852), Tenable (24602), SecurityFocus (BID 20992†) and OSVDB (30267†).
