A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Ipswitch IMail up to 6.4 (Mail Server Software). This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the component Attachment Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. The web server in IPSWITCH IMail 6.04 and earlier allows remote attackers to read and delete arbitrary files via a .. (dot dot) attack.
The weakness was disclosed 10/20/2000 (Website). The advisory is available at marc.info. This vulnerability was named CVE-2000-0780. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
