A vulnerability was found in MIT Kerberos up to 5-1.4.1 (Network Authentication Software). It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown part of the component Key Distribution Center. MIT Kerberos 5 (krb5) 1.3 through 1.4.1 Key Distribution Center (KDC) allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a certain valid TCP connection that causes a free of unallocated memory.
The bug was discovered 07/12/2005. The weakness was shared 07/13/2005 by Daniel Wachdorf (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at web.mit.edu. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2005-1174 since 04/19/2005. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1499 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at web.mit.edu. A possible mitigation has been published 4 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
