A vulnerability was found in MIT Kerberos up to 5-1.4.1 (Network Authentication Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the component Key Distribution Center. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. MIT Kerberos 5 (krb5) 1.3 through 1.4.1 Key Distribution Center (KDC) allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a certain valid TCP connection that causes a free of unallocated memory.
The bug was discovered 07/12/2005. The weakness was published 07/13/2005 by Daniel Wachdorf (Website). The advisory is shared for download at web.mit.edu. This vulnerability was named CVE-2005-1174 since 04/19/2005. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 18686 (GLSA-200507-11 : MIT Kerberos 5: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115270 (Apple Mac OS X Security Update 2005-007 v1.1 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2005-08-17)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at web.mit.edu. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9075.
