A vulnerability has been found in Alt-N MDaemon 3.1.1 (Mail Server Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the component WebConfig. The manipulation as part of a URL leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Heap overflow in WebConfig in Mdaemon 3.1.1 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service and possibly execute arbitrary commands via a long URL.
The weakness was disclosed 12/11/2000 with VIGILANTe (Website). The advisory is available at marc.theaimsgroup.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2000-1021. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed in Perl. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 86023 (Alt-N MDaemon 3.1.1 DoS Vulnerability).
