A vulnerability was found in Sophos Anti-Virus up to 5.0.1 (Anti-Malware Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown functionality of the component ZIP Archive Handler. The manipulation of the argument Extra Field Length with the input value 0xFFFF leads to a infinite loop vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-835. Sophos Anti-Virus 5.0.1, with "Scan inside archive files" enabled, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (CPU consumption by infinite loop) via a Bzip2 archive with a large Extra field length value.
The weakness was published 07/15/2005 with iDEFENSE (Website). The advisory is shared at idefense.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2005-1530. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1499 for this issue.
It is declared as proof-of-concept.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at sophos.com. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9029.
