A vulnerability was found in NullSoft WinAmp 5.03a/5.09/5.091/5.093 (Multimedia Player Software). It has been classified as critical. Affected is some unknown functionality of the component ID3v2 Tag Handler. The manipulation of the argument Artist as part of a Long String leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Buffer overflow in Winamp 5.03a, 5.09 and 5.091, and other versions before 5.094, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via an MP3 file with a long ID3v2 tag such as (1) ARTIST or (2) TITLE.
The bug was discovered 06/22/2005. The weakness was released 07/15/2005 by Leon Juranic with LSS Security Team (Website). The advisory is available at security.lss.hr. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2005-2310 since 07/19/2005. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at winamp.com. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be establishing an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4002.
