Oracle Database up to 9.0.2 cross site scripting

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability identified as critical has been detected in Oracle Database up to 9.0.2. Impacted is an unknown function. This manipulation causes cross site scripting. This vulnerability appears as CVE-2005-2379. The attack may be initiated remotely. In addition, an exploit is available. You should upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Oracle Database up to 9.0.2 (Database Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Multiple cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities in Oracle Reports 9.0.2 allow remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via the (1) debug parameter to showenv, (2) test parameter to parsequery, or (3) delimiter or (4) CELLWRAPPER parameter to rwservlet.

The bug was discovered 07/31/2003. The weakness was presented 07/20/2005 by Alexander Kornbrust (vlet) with Red-Database-Security (Website). The advisory is shared at red-database-security.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2005-2379 since 07/26/2005. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.

After even before and not, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 720 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 19142 (Oracle Reports Server Multiple Cross-Site Scripting Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at oracle.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (21438), SecurityFocus (BID 14313†), OSVDB (18120†), Secunia (SA16092†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1014528†). See VDB-1635, VDB-1637, VDB-1638 and VDB-1636 for similar entries. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
