Details
A vulnerability was found in Oracle Database up to 9.0.2 (Database Software). It has been classified as problematic. This affects an unknown code of the file /reports/rwservlet of the component desformat File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
Directory traversal vulnerability in Oracle Reports 6.0, 6i, 9i, and 10g allows remote attackers to overwrite arbitrary files via (1) "..", (2) Windows drive letter (C:), and (3) absolute path sequences in the desname parameter. NOTE: this issue was probably fixed by REP06 in CPU Jan 2006, in which case it overlaps CVE-2006-0289.
The bug was discovered 01/17/2005. The weakness was published 07/20/2005 by Alexander Kornbrust with Red-Database-Security (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at red-database-security.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2005-2371 since 07/26/2005. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1006 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 184 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at oracle.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
