Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in F5 BIG-IP up to 4.6.3 (Firewall Software). Affected by this issue is the function slc_add_reply of the component Telnet Client SLC. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Buffer overflow in the slc_add_reply function in various BSD-based Telnet clients, when handling LINEMODE suboptions, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a reply with a large number of Set Local Character (SLC) commands.
The bug was discovered 03/28/2005. The weakness was published 07/20/2005 by Gaël Delalleau with iDEFENSE (Website). The advisory is shared for download at tech.f5.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2005-0469 since 02/18/2005. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 7 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 19270 (Debian DSA-765-1 : heimdal - buffer overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
